Whether you’re strolling along the banks of Columbia or Clinton Beach Park or walking one of the miles of trails at Deception State Park, we know your dog loves to go everywhere with you. Most parks across Whidbey Island require dogs to be on a leash, but there are a few excellent off-leash spots where Fido can let loose and let out the “zoomies”.
Who better to judge these parks, then the pooch himself?! We asked Instagram’s @merfthegolden to give us a tour or his favorite spots around the island.
Coming in at #6… Technical Drive Off-leash Dog Park
This is a great spot for working pups on the North side. Located in the back parking lot of an office complex. This park is fully fenced with several benches, a covered area, several picnic tables, as well as a couple enrichment “toys” dogs can interact with.
At #5, Marguerite Brons Memorial Park in Clinton, WA.
This is an excellent spot for South-siders. Located in Clinton, WA, this park is a sprawling 13 acres and features a fenced off-leash area, wooded trails, picnic shelter, info kiosk, water, lights (for those dark 4 p.m. nights), ample parking and a year round portable toilet.
#4 Patmore Pit Off-leash Park
Patmore Pit is an exceptional spot for long runs in the central part of the island. The dog park boasts 20 sprawling acres with plenty of grass and lots of trees.
Amenities include: lots of parking, info kiosk, water, picnic tables, enclosed agility area, very large free run area (partially enclosed), plus a small dog or agility area where you can work with your pup one-on-one.
Coming in at #3, Clover Valley Off-leash Area.
This is a great spot and would rank even higher, if the top two weren’t so amazing.
This is a unique spot because of the combination of open grassy areas and forested spots.
Amenities include: plenty of parking, info kiosk, picnic shelter, portable bathroom and enclosed free run area.
I’ll say two words about the next pick. Sand and seagulls. Need I say more?
#2 Double Bluff Beach and Off-Leash Area is one of the best spots on the island for “zoomies” in the sand and saltwater baths.
The off-leash area itself is only about 3/4 of an acre, but there’s plenty more room to walk your dog along the water on a leash.
Amenities include: beach access, clamming areas, vault restrooms, interpretive signage, picnic area and an off-leash area prime for all island dogs.
Warning: There is limited parking, so plan ahead.
Coming in at number one…
#1 – Greenbank Off-leash Area
This was a close one, as few things beat dog zoomies on the beach, however this spacious farm with miles of walking trails is one of the largest off-leash areas on the island. On nice days you can take in sweeping views of the Cascade Mountains, the Olympic Range and the Puget Sound.
Plus Greenbank Farm is a great spot to grab a snack or a glass of wine before you leave.
